How the estimate works
Duration equals word count divided by speaking pace. Word boundaries are detected with the browser’s international text segmenter when available, including Japanese and Arabic.
Measure Your Speaking Speed in Words per Minute
Speaking speed is the number of words you actually say divided by the elapsed time in minutes. Use it to compare your own takes. A number alone cannot tell you whether an explanation is clear.
Use the complete take for a useful average
If you say 240 words in two minutes, your overall rate is 120 words per minute. If that recording contains 20 seconds of silence, the speaking-only rate is 144: 240 ÷ (100 ÷ 60). Both are valid measures, but they answer different questions.
For planning a video, include normal pauses in the elapsed time. Paste the words actually spoken; remove stage directions or sections you skipped. Compare takes using the same counting method.

Understand the calculator's limits
The tool segments text into words with the browser's language-aware segmenter when available. Abbreviations, numbers and languages without spaces can produce counts unlike a manual transcription. Japanese word segmentation is not the same as character counting.
The pace labels are broad practice cues, not medical, educational or language-specific standards. Use your listener's needs and the complexity of the material to guide delivery. All text calculation happens in your browser.
